Vilcanota Canyon

The final trek to Machu Picchu can be made in one of two ways; 1) by foot, or 2) by train.  We chose train, but either route begins in Ollantaytambo taking travelers along the Vilcanota river that has cut through the mountains to create this beautiful canyon with class III and IV+ white water rapids.  Some of these rapids are so strong that rafting is not permitted.  On either side of the canyon the mountains rise high above the train tracks.  Hikers spend 4 days and 3 nights making the trek.  Our train ride was approximately 2 hours.
