Today we started with a walk along Mikkelsen Harbour. It was sunny and 48 degrees out. I was definitely over dressed. Took my hat off and could have removed one of my two shirts. Better too warm than the other way. The wildlife was gentoo penguins and they were quite stinky. There was also an Argentinian emergency shelter building. Surrounding us was all sorts of iceberg bits (what the small ice that is floating by us is called) and large icebergs. There were even some ice calving happening. That is when some of the ice comes off the iceberg. Unfortunately, it happens so fast that I couldn’t catch it on video. When we got back, I sat outside for a little bit before lunch watching the penguins swim by.
In the afternoon we headed out on the zodiacs. As we got out, they were already spotting humpback whales. We had some great shots and one even raised its fluke right in front of us, but my camera wasn’t on the right setting and I didn’t get the shot. Saw many more whales, but no more tails. Arg! Got some great videos of the penguins jumping out of the water and into the water. Also got some amazing pictures of the ice on the water with the icebergs. After coming back, I sat on my deck for awhile and watched the whales some more. It was quite spectacular. Every day gets more beautiful and amazing! It is almost 10 pm as I write this and the sun is shining bright. Will need to close the shades soon otherwise I will be up all night.
