Victoria Falls
Last nights adventure was not yet complete. We were awoken early to the sounds of an elephant outside our tent. The ellie was ripping apart trees for quite some time. Troy tried to take a look out the door of the tent but did not go outside. Quite an end to a very cool evening. Throughout the night we heard many animals around us including our elephant friend.
We awoke at sunrise. We watched the sun come up through a section of our tent. It was very beautiful. As I sat outside before breakfast, a baboon walked right past me. There was also an impala eating some of the grass nearby. As I looked up at the island across the way, I saw a hippo standing just at the side of the water. Soon afterward a boat came by and scared the hippo and he ran into the water. Never seen such a large creature move so fast. All this and it wasn’t even 7:30 am yet!
Today’s adventure was going to Victoria Falls. The folks at the lodge told us it would be a two hour walk. Having been to Niagara Falls, I couldn’t figure out why it would take so long. That was until I got there. The falls had very low water flow, but still so impressive. The rainy season starts in November and I can’t imagine being there when the water is high as there was still a lot of spray. Thankful spray as the temperature had to be over 100 degrees. While coming during the rainy season is probably beautiful to see, taking pictures would be difficult as your camera would spend most of its time in the bag. We are on the Zimbabwe side of the falls, which is good as at this time of year when it is so dry people on the Zambezi side cannot see the falls. After the falls, Randy and Charlotte along with another couple from our camp went on a helicopter ride over the falls. Their pictures were stunning and you could get a sense for how large the falls are.
Troy and I came back to camp and I took a swim in the pool, which was very cold. Troy tried to go in, but the water was too cool for him. The rest of the day was spent relaxing around camp. We took another sunset cruise. While we didn’t see as many animals we did encounter one elephant spraying himself with water, it was nice to be on the water.
