Ollantaytambu and the route to Machu Picchu

Monday, April 25, 2011

Today we headed off to Machu Picchu.  We left our hotel around 9:00 am and the driver took us to Ollantaytambo to catch the train, but before we headed out we walked around the city.  The Inca people were amazing!  The architecture of the houses and aqueducts used to move the water was before their time.  People are still living in the houses.  They live with guinea pigs in their house.  They are not pets, but a food source or used to barter for food.  We then stopped by a Peruvian school to give the children pens that Terri had brought.  They were 5 years old and very cute.  Some of the girls were shy and would put their head down when we came by to hand them the pen, but other children held out their hands to take the pen and they had big smiles on their faces.  It was remarkable to see and as most know I don’t even like children, but I was so moved.  Before we left they sang us a song.
