Chinstrap Penguin

Today’s first embarkation was in Telefon Bay at Deception Island. It was also our opportunity to do the polar plunge. Not much wild life. Instead it was all volcanic rock / dirt. We walked up the hill to look in the crater. Then we walked to the peak. Everyone was taking pictures at the top, but there was no view so I chose to skip it. When we came back down they had started the polar plunge. I kept hesitating, but finally decided to go in as I know I would regret it if I didn’t. I ran in and it wasn’t too bad. I even dunked down to my neck. My feet were completely numb when I got out. Thankfully I had the toe warmers on my socks.

The afternoon adventure was to Half Moon Island. We walked around and took in the scenery. It was just spectacular! They also showed us bones of whales that died on the beach. The bones looked like wood. Then we headed over to where the chinstrap penguins were. They sat up high on a rocky hill and had to go down the hill to get to water and back up to get to their nests. Looked like a lot of work to hop around. For the second landing, the sun came out and it made everything so beautiful. With the sun and all the layers on I am not cold at all. They also mentioned that it was around 40 degrees out.

Tomorrow we get Covid tested. If everyone is clear including the staff, they may minimize some of the protocols. Hope everyone is good. Before our second outing, I removed my sea sickness patch. Waters have been pretty calm, so I think I should be good until we head back.
