Today was the day of transition. I moved from my hotel in Palermo to the hotel in the business district the tour company had us at. Used Uber as I guess it is hard to find a taxi and it was cheaper than a taxi.
When I got to the hotel we had a special area to check in. There are 4 groups with 26 or 27 people in each group so a total of 106 individuals going to Antarctica. Shortly after getting there, they took those of us that had arrived on a walking tour of the area. So got to meet a few people on the tour. Not sure if any of them are in my group, the Rock Hoppers (each group is named after a different penguin) as we didn’t have much time to talk.
There are 5 other people from Wisconsin and they are all together in a different group. Funny how I am not with them. There are some people from Florida in my group though. After the orientation walk, I had 3 1/2 hours to kill before dinner, so I thought I would walk to the Hard Rock to get a tee shirt. Probably not the best idea. The route that the GPS took me was a little sketchy. I took a different route back and felt a little safer.
When I got closer to the hotel, I found the theater that is in many of the guide books. Later found out that it was closed due to Covid.
Went down for dinner a little before 6 pm and met some really fun people, a couple from Connecticut and two couples from North Carolina. I sat at the same table with them and had a great time! After dinner there was a tango demonstration. The orchestra had a button box player, but there was no polka music. 😊
